This variety demonstrates a larger serial font. Similar to our first variety, above, but with slight font variation. Around the 75000 serial mark, the text above serial stamp denoting weight, metal and purity changed to a smaller font with more spacing, most evident is the smaller SILVER at center. Note that this variety lacks the traditional Canadian ‘Bull’ Hallmark. Introduced in 1968 with production through early 1970’s. Additional information regarding this bar may be found at this LINK. These leading fillers slipped out of position just enough to leave an impression of the bottom or top half of the letter and number, see our recent article ‘ THE X8 FACTOR‘ for additional information. The serial number errors on these pieces resulted from part of the letter ‘X’ and number ‘8’ that were used as fillers for the lead position on the rotary stamp. The examples we’ve observed demonstrate a faint ‘X8’ over-stamp to the left of serial number. Produced in the late 1960’s, this is the earliest known variety of 1oz Engelhard production bar. There are surely a few more we haven’t encountered yet, and we welcome collectors to share any new discoveries.
